A worn intake-zone screw element can reduce the ability of a twin screw extruder to receive and move material into the downstream processing section. For an existing 65-class extrusion line, replacing the element accurately requires more than matching the nominal machine size.
This 62.4mm twin screw extruder screw element is designed for intake-zone OEM replacement where the outside diameter, single-flight SK profile, element length, spline interface and end-face dimensions must match the existing screw assembly.
The current configuration uses W6Mo5Cr4V2 / 6542 tool steel and controlled dimensional tolerances to support accurate replacement fit.
The intake zone determines how effectively material enters the screw channel and moves toward the downstream melting and mixing sections.
As the original SK element wears, its effective flight geometry and working clearance may gradually change. This can contribute to unstable material intake or reduced feeding efficiency, particularly when processing powders or formulations with lower bulk density.
However, intake problems should not automatically be attributed to one screw element.
Actual feeding performance also depends on:
The purpose of the replacement SK element is therefore to restore the required geometry at the original process position rather than simply installing a “more aggressive" feeding element.
This screw element is designed around a 62.4 mm outside diameter for 65-class twin screw extrusion systems.
The single-flight SK geometry should match the original intake-zone function and existing screw configuration.
Important replacement parameters include:
Changing only the flight profile without considering the surrounding screw design may alter filling level, conveying behavior, torque or downstream processing conditions.
For OEM replacement, accurate functional matching is normally more important than changing the original geometry without process evaluation.
When only one or several screw elements are being replaced, dimensional consistency becomes particularly important.
The current manufacturing specification includes:
A modular twin screw assembly contains many individual elements installed continuously along the shaft.
If one replacement component has an incorrect length or end-face dimension, the error can affect neighboring elements, total screw-stack length and final assembly condition.
Controlled tolerances help the new SK element integrate into the existing screw set without unexpected gaps, interference or positioning errors.
The current element is manufactured from W6Mo5Cr4V2, commonly referred to as 6542 tool steel.
Material selection should still be connected to the actual process.
Wear in the intake area can vary depending on:
If the existing 6542 element has already provided acceptable service life, maintaining the same material specification may be a practical replacement choice.
If the original element is wearing much faster than expected, the wear mechanism should be reviewed before simply manufacturing another identical component.
The most expensive or hardest material is not automatically the best option for every intake-zone position.
The nominal outside diameter only identifies the general element size.
A reliable replacement also needs to match:
Working profile → Lead and pitch → Element length → Internal spline → End faces → Transition geometry → Installation position
The spline interface is especially important because it transfers torque between the shaft and the screw element.
If spline clearance becomes too large, repeated loading can increase relative movement and interface wear.
If the fit is too tight, installation and removal may become difficult.
The objective is therefore to restore the correct functional fit with the existing shaft rather than simply reproduce the external appearance of the old element.
Older extrusion lines do not always have complete original drawings.
In these cases, an existing screw element can be used for measurement and replacement development.
However, a worn sample should not be copied directly.
Before final dimensions are determined, the old element should be checked for:
Where possible, comparing the worn element with neighboring screw elements, the shaft interface or other original dimensions can help reconstruct the correct functional geometry.
This avoids reproducing service wear in the new component.
In many modular twin screw systems, yes.
If the shaft, barrel and remaining screw elements are still within acceptable condition, an individual worn SK element can be evaluated for replacement without changing the complete screw set.
The new element must still match:
Existing shaft → Neighboring elements → Original process position → Overall screw configuration
If feeding performance does not recover after replacement, the surrounding conveying elements, feeder condition and downstream restriction should also be checked.
Replacing one element cannot compensate for a problem elsewhere in the complete feeding system.
For an initial review, please provide:
If the original drawing is unavailable, the used element can be measured after the worn areas have been identified.
No. The working profile, lead, element length, spline, end faces and transition geometry must also match the existing screw assembly.
No. Feeding performance also depends on feeder capacity, material bulk density, screw speed, adjacent screw elements and downstream process conditions.
Yes. However, the worn areas must first be identified so that service wear is not reproduced in the new component.
Yes, when the shaft, barrel and neighboring screw elements remain suitable for continued use and the new element can be accurately matched.
If your 65-class extrusion line has a worn intake-zone SK element or unstable material intake, send us the existing element, drawing or dimensional information together with its position in the screw configuration.
We can evaluate:
62.4mm dimensions → Single-flight SK profile → Spline interface → Element length → End-face fit → Material → OEM replacement compatibility
